Coiba Island National Park is located in the Montijo and Sona districts in the province of Veraguas. Flights from Panama is about 50 minutes and if you rather take the road it will take some 10 hours. Once you arrive to the city of Santiago, provincial capital and there to Mariato Port where you will take a boat to the archipelago. Coiba is a jewel of incredible natural reserves, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Protect marine, island and coastal ecosystems. It is made up of a group of islands whose largest is Coiba Island of volcanic origin.
 
 
Main Fishing Sites:
Around the Coiba island and other islands of the archipelago.

Main Species:
The seas of Coiba are traditionally known for its abundant fishing. There are Pacific tarpon, red snappers, catfish, sword fish, dorados, tuna, sail fish, black merlin, among others.

Other species:
Shark whales, tiger shark, manta ray and yellow fin tunas. The Coiba seas are also home to four species like: the enormous hunched back whale, orca, and different types of dolphins.

Fishing techniques:
Normally what are practiced are trolling. Daysi chains, bate, etc. Think in offshore fishing.

Season:
The best time for fishing merlin and sail fish corresponds to the months of December to early May and its peak is February. Other species, during the months of Abril to November.

Recommendations:
Fishing in this area of the Pacific, should not be done alone because it is a protected zone and must be accompanied by local guides.

Tournaments:
Coiba is the site of international fishing tournaments. One of the main sports fishing events is the Don Porfi Tournaments in memory of Don Porfirio Saiz, great athlete and fishermen with unbeatable record in Sail Fish of Panama.
